Say it isn't so!

I actually agree with a feminazi feminist??

Well, the first shirt discussed in the above article doesn't bother me at all. I don't 100% agree with its message, but I don't think it's worth protesting over. But the second? In our culture today, that's a dangerous message. Eating disorders are an epidemic, and there are more kids in American high schools who have body image issues than don't. And let's face it, UO, with it's size 0 (or less) models, is not targeting this message toward people who actually need to diet.

Of course, me boycotting their store would be like me boycotting Mars. Since I don't ever go there anyway, I doubt it will make much difference to them! Still, who's with me?

One of these days I may get back to the design talk, but given that Blogger has just launched totally new design tools, it seems I may be too late...

Life in BunGirl's World...

Busy busy busy today... Some things that have been going on:

  • Last weekend while I was at Irish Fest, our littlest dog Donovan got himself in a good deal of trouble. Grump arrived home to find that he had pulled the water line off the back of the toilet and flooded the bathroom. The water then ran under our flooring and through the bedroom and living room. We've been dealing with the aftermath ever since. I haven't slept in my own bed in days because the bedroom is all torn up right now and there have been several industrial-strength dryers running non-stop down there. As of this morning we're down to one dryer. Next step is to get the flooring folks to come out and measure and whatnot and see how bad the damage is there. I'll be glad when this is over.
  • The very same little imp got neutered today, so now I have two dogs wandering around in e-collars. It's kinda cute -- they match.
  • Big bunny-business meeting tonight, which means stuff to do. If anyone is reading this in the Dallas/Denton area and would like to help out, just let me know! We can always use more foster homes, and there are lots of other ways to help too. Also, could use a projector that would run from my laptop, for classes and slide shows and such, so if anyone out there knows of a place to get such a thing for under $400 (cheapest I've found so far) or a place who would be willing to donate one to a 501(c) group, please let me know!

Puppy Bowl Sunday

Just wanted to take a minute to remind my readers that today an incredibly important sporting event will play on TV screens across the country. There's already plenty of betting going on for the MVP of the game, and serious fans have their favorites all picked out from the starting line-up, but I think I'm going with Bingo, the American Staffordshire Terrier/ American Pit Bull Mix. What, you thought I was talking about that other game? Please! This guy is gonna be much more entertaining than anything they'll have at the University of Phoenix Stadium.

Writers Strike

I read a lot of blogs. I also read a lot of webcomics. When the authors of said webcomics write decent blogs, you can bet I'm on board. Such is the case with Scott Kurtz of PVP. Today he posted about how the writers' strike in Hollywood has made him look at a lot of old hobbies differently, and how he's reevaluating his television habits. Kudos to him! There's a pretty good quote on there too that really hits the nail on the head about this entire thing, but I'll let you follow the above link and read it there yourself.

So I got to thinking. The blogworld has been buzzing with talk about this strike for some time now, but I have remained silent on the matter. Why, you might ask? Because were it not for the posts of other bloggers, I would not even have realized that there was a strike going on. Grump and I cancelled our satellite tv subscription a few months back. At the moment it's been reactivated, but only so that we can catch all the Christmas specials on tv this time of year. Television hasn't held much fascination for me for quite a number of years. I mean, there have been a few shows I've enjoyed, but overall it's just a load of crap that I could just as well do without. It seems that this strike has made a lot of people realize that.

I mean really, how does television enrich my life? Or yours? Or anyone's? For most people out there it's a way of turning off all of your higher thinking processes and letting yourself just veg out. Now don't get me wrong, that's something we should all do from time to time. We all need time to just quiet our minds and not think. But not five or six hours a day, or more in many cases.

I know a lot of people will say that the internet is no different, but it is. The internet is interactive. Some folks choose to surf the mind-numbing stuff and that's it, but many more of us use this wonderful world wide web to express our creativity, reach out to other people, learn, grow and better ourselves. After all, that's what this blogging thing is at it's root isn't it? A way of connecting with people from all over the world? That's how I see it anyway. Even games aid development in hand-eye coordination, puzzle solving skills, and other fundamental abilities.

So if the writers of lame sitcoms and lamer dramas refuse to work, what is it to me? I couldn't care less. I'm quite happy here in front of my computer where I control my entertainment, rather than the other way around. I'm happy with a means of engaging my brain, rather than disengaging. And if those writers find themselves out of jobs, so much the better. Maybe if more of us would keep our brains firmly in "on" mode, our society as a whole would be a little better off. But perhaps that's just me.
