Musical Mondays: Canada

In honor of Canada Day (tomorrow) the theme this week is Canada. What better song to honor the country to the north than Five Iron Frenzy's "Oh Canada"? Enjoy:

Lyrics:
Welcome to Canada, it's the Maple Leaf State.
Canada, oh Canada it's great!
The people are nice and they speak French too.
If you don't like it, man, you sniff glue.
The Great White North, their kilts are plaid,
Hosers take off, it's not half bad.

I want to be where yaks can run free,
Where Royal Mounties can arrest me.

Let's go to Canada, let's leave today,
Canada, oh, Canada, I S'il Vous Plait.

They've got trees, and mooses, and sled dogs,
Lots of lumber, and lumberjacks, and logs!
We all think it's kind of a drag,
That you have to go there to get milk in a bag.
They say "eh?" instead of "what?" or "duh?"
That's the mighty power of Canada.

I want to be where lemmings run into the sea,
Where the marmosets can attack me.

Let's go to Canada, let's leave today,
Canada, oh, Canada, I S'il Vous Plait.
Let's go to Canada, let's leave today,
Canada, oh, Canada, I S'il Vous Plait.

Please, please, explain to me,
How this all has come to be,
We forgot to mention something here.
Did we say that William Shatner, is a native citizen?
And Slurpees made from venison, That's deer.

Let's go to Canada, let's leave today,
Canada, oh, Canada, I S'il Vous Plait.

Musical Mondays: Summer

This week the theme is Summer, and I can think of no music that fits better than that of the Beach Boys. Summer never officially started for me until we popped the Beach Boys casette into the car radio and rolled the windows down. Picking a single song from their repertoire would be impossible though, so I found on YouTube a medley with a lot of their greatest hits rolled together into one package. Unfortunately, there's a long intro on this video, but the music starts about 1:10 for those who want to skip through.

As for lyrics, here are the lyrics for each of the individual songs that combined to form the medley:
Of course, I would highly recommend checking out the full versions of any of those songs if you like what you hear in the medley, and maybe even checking out some other tunes by the Beach Boys. You really can't go wrong there when you're looking for summery tunes.

Now, on to Pandora's picks:
  1. "Hard Day's Night" by the Beatles
  2. "Blue Moon" by the Marcels
  3. "Because" by the Dave Clark Five
  4. "Wouldn't It Be Nice" by the Beach Boys
  5. "Little Bit O' Soul" by Music Explosion

Musical Mondays: Dad

This week the theme is "Dad" in honor of Father's Day. It's no secret to most who know me that while my Dad was alive, we never got along. Just one of the many things that we didn't see eye to eye on was music -- he being a devoted country music fan, and me being into just about every style but country. Still, when I was too young to know much of anything about music, I listened to his radio station and there were certain songs that I did enjoy. Some of these songs have stuck with me even today, and while I loathe country music in general (I know, I'm living in the wrong state...) there are a few older country tunes that I do somewhat enjoy. The Grump laughs anytime I stop on a country station when scanning the radio dial.

My father's favorite musician of all time would have to be Willie Nelson. If you ever got him started on Willie, he could tell you the man's entire life story, possibly better than the artist himself could. This week I've chosen to use a Willie song that I used to sing along with from the time I was just a tot. I think my first words may have been "On the Road Again"... Well, maybe not, but it couldn't have come much later than that.

This version is taken from the movie "Honeysuckle Rose" which is almost as old as I am. Please ignore the dialog inserted in the scene...

Lyrics:
On the road again
Just can't wait to get on the road again
The life I love is makin' music with my friends
And I can't wait to get on the road again
On the road again
Goin' places that I've never been
Seein' things that I may never see again,
And I can't wait to get on the road again.

On the road again
Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway
We're the best of friends
Insisting that the world be turnin' our way
And our way
Is on the road again
Just can't wait to get on the road again
The life I love is makin' music with my friends
And I can't wait to get on the road again

On the road again
Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway
We're the best of friends
Insisting that the world be turnin' our way
And our way
Is on the road again

Just can't wait to get on the road again
The life I love is makin' music with my friends
And I can't wait to get on the road again
And I can't wait to get on the road again

And Pandora's choices: (aka. "You might be a redneck if your music collection includes these tunes.")
  1. "I'm Not Built That Way" by Billy Dean
  2. "My Love Affair With Trains" by Merle Haggard
  3. "Feelin' Single--Seein' Double" by Emmylou Harris
  4. "(If It Weren't For Country Music) I'd Go Crazy" by Clinton Gregory
  5. "Just in Case" by Exile
