I don't really know why...

Anita posted today about phones and her dislike of them. I just gotta chime in here. I HATE talking on the phone. No particular reason for it, I just can't stand it. E-mail me, IM me, write to me the old fashioned way, or don't bother. I just can't deal with talking on the phone. I never had that phase that all teenage girls are supposed to go through where they talk on the phone for hours about nothing. I have always disliked the phone. It's not some kind of phobia or anything. I just don't like it. I hate subscriptions where you can sign up online, but you have to call and talk to one of their sales guys to cancel. I hate calling a restaurant or store to find out their hours or get directions. I can not deal with telemarketers. It's so bad that both of the phones in our house are in some way disfunctional, and yet I feel no compulsion to replace either of them. They've been that way for a couple of years now. I have a cell phone that I can use when I need to, but I DO NOT use it as I am driving 80 mph down the highway.

Anyone else out there have some seemingly normal object/technology/whatever that just annoys them to no end? Or is it just me???

I don't dislike the phone, itself. It just sits there, innocuously. I dislike it when it rings. /cheeky :)

Seriously, though, I've discovered that I enjoy talking to people the most when I've got consecutive days off work and feel disconnected. I don't email when I'm not at work, and so I don't get that daily conversation with my best friend or mom that way. The only other time I really enjoy talking on the phone is when I only have to talk to machines, not people. Then I don't have to deal with any annoying questions...I can just check the balance on my credit card. :)

Also, like you, I never went through that girltalk teenage phone craze, either, and never understood it.

Did you get horsecrazy? That was big when I was a pre-teenlet, but I never got into that, either. Maybe it made a difference that I'm wildly allergic. Hee-hee.

Nope. Never was into horses either. I know what you mean about talking to machines though... so much easier! And they don't put you on hold and make you listen to that awful stuff they try to pass off as music!

Phone hater + 1. No cell either. I don't really feel the need to be tethered to technology (even tho I work in technology).

I also often let my answering machine screen my calls. My pet peeve is being on hold for an hour hearing "your call is important to us" 20 times. They really couldn't care less if I hung up or not, they are just stroking me to make me feel good about being on hold. Arrrghh.

Anita left off 1 scenario.

I phone someone, it rings and rings. Are they on the phone? I hang up. I call back in 30 minutes (maybe they just got home from work), it rings and rings. Are they ditchin me? I call back in 45 mintues, it rings and rings.

All I'm trying to do is leave a message! Help me out here. But in reality, they are on the phone the whole time talking to a girlfriend/parents/whomever and I look like a freakin stalker!

Ok, yeah, but I actually NEED to have either a cell phone. Remember, I have NO sense of direction, so calling and saying "Ummm... somehow I wound up here, how do I get there" or "I think I know where I made the wrong turn, but it took me several miles of driving to figure it out, so I'm gonna be late" is normal for me. You should remember this from trying to give me directions in Ekat...
