This week the theme is heavy. At nearly 100 lbs, I think this guy qualifies. This is my German Shepherd Dog, Vali (pronounced like volley). He looks quite imposing, but looks can be deceiving. On the inside, he's just a big ol mamma's boy!
Yup, the worst part is, he hasn't even filled out yet -- he's only a little over a year old. I call him my "big boy". LOL Wouldn't trade him for the world though, even if he weighed 200 lbs.
Oh, and Daisy, I should mention -- he's afraid of cats! Shortly after we got him a little orange kitten spooked him while we were on a walk and he got away from me and ran all the way home with his tail tucked between his legs!
I think a lot of people confuse them with Belgian Malinois, which look about the same but a bit smaller. These days Malinois are more often used as police dogs, because of their more compact size. Most folks though, see a K-9 officer and assume it's a GSD. So lots of folks don't realize that GSDs are actually quite a bit bigger. Course, if you think GSDs are big, you should really look up Shiloh Shepherds. They're some pretty hefty dogs (that also look a lot like GSDs)!
So now there's comment moderation on this blog for all posts over 14 days old. You can thank the guy who hit the announcement of my puppy's death with a spam comment.
We used to have German Shepherds when I was a kid. Yep, they get pretty heavy. He's a good looking dog, BTW.
ReplyDeleteWow, Vali weighs more than 15 of me! He looks very nice though.

What a magnificent dog!! I love GSD's. They can be anything their owners want them to be, from police dogs to pussycats.
ReplyDeleteAnd I mean pussycats with the deepest respect.
Marvelous dog, and you say he'll get heavier? Wow! Huge and heavy softie.
ReplyDeleteHe's gorgeous. Is 100 lbs heavy for a shepherd? He looks so healthy.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful dog. Great photo and have a good week.
ReplyDeleteHe's a beauty! Great picture. :)
ReplyDeleteHeavy Dog.. I love German Shepherds!
ReplyDeleteJan, don't worry -- I won't tell him you called him a pussycat!
ReplyDeletedragonstar, he's only a little over a year old, so he still has some filling out to do. He's a bit on the scrawny side at the moment.
byrningbunny, 75-110 lbs is normal, but 130 is not unheard of.
all -- thanks for the compliments. I'll be sure to pass them on to Vali. ; )
I'm surprised. I didn't know shepherds got quite that big. I figured 100 lbs would be the TOP end...
